KCL's Skills for Future Work programme connects personalised SEND education with accredited learning, practical experience and Preparation for Adulthood.
Through our EOTAS and Alternative Provision programmes, learners can explore vocational interests in real-world learning environments, develop recognised achievements and build an individual pathway towards further education, vocational training, work experience, apprenticeships and employment.
Our approach is aspiration-led. The environment supports the learner — it does not determine their destination.
From aspiration to progression
One ladder, climbed at the learner's own rate.
Every pathway is developed around the learner's strengths, interests, EHCP outcomes, support needs and aspirations for adulthood. Depending on their individual programme, learners can progress through:

Construction & engineering pathways
Trades learned alongside someone who does the job.

Electrical & Building Services
For learners interested in electrical careers, KCL provides a supported pathway combining practical learning with an experienced electrician, accredited achievement, Functional Skills and Preparation for Adulthood. Learners can develop electrical and engineering-related knowledge alongside problem-solving, measurement, safe working practices and workplace behaviours.
As learners progress, KCL can prepare them for the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment and support progression towards the appropriate ECS card pathway, further electrical training, work experience and apprenticeships.

Carpentry & Construction
Learners can develop practical carpentry and construction skills with an experienced carpenter, connecting hands-on learning with accredited education. Learning can incorporate measurement, tools and materials, planning, problem-solving, health and safety, Functional English and maths and employability.
Where appropriate, KCL can also prepare learners for the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test and support progression towards appropriate CSCS pathways, occupational qualifications, work experience, further education and apprenticeships.

Engineering & Fabrication
Hands-on learning through engineering, materials, fabrication and practical problem-solving. Learners develop technical understanding, measurement, safe working practices and employability skills, with opportunities to progress into supervised welding and specialist engineering skills where appropriate.
Accreditation can include the AQA Unit Award Scheme and appropriate NCFE Occupational Studies, supporting progression into further education, specialist training, work experience and apprenticeships.
Farm & land-based pathways
Learning and progression in a real working environment.
KCL also provides farm-based learning in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, offering young people opportunities to learn in an environment that can support both therapeutic engagement and vocational progression.
For some learners, the farm environment can support regulation, communication, confidence and engagement with education. For others, it can provide a foundation for future study, training or employment in animal care, horticulture and land-based industries. For many learners, it can do both.

Animal Care
Learners can develop practical experience in areas such as animal care, welfare, routines, responsibility, communication and safe working while working towards appropriate accredited outcomes.
Progression may include further animal-care qualifications, college, work experience, volunteering or employment within animal and land-based settings.

Horticulture & Growing
Practical horticulture provides opportunities to develop skills through growing, planting, maintaining outdoor spaces and completing purposeful projects.
Activities can also embed Functional English and maths, independence, teamwork, planning and employability.

Land-Based & Outdoor Skills
Learners can develop wider practical and employability skills through meaningful outdoor and land-based activities.
Programmes can support progression towards further land-based education, vocational training, work experience, volunteering and employment, according to the learner's aspirations.

Creative, hospitality and digital routes run elsewhere.
Skills for Future Work covers the construction, engineering and land-based routes. If a learner's interest is music, catering or digital, these run from other KCL settings and can sit inside the same personalised programme.
Accredited learning with purpose
More than vocational enrichment.
Depending on the learner's starting point and programme, opportunities can include the AQA Unit Award Scheme, NCFE Occupational Studies, Functional Skills English and maths, and vocational and Preparation for Adulthood achievements.
This enables learners to begin with accessible achievements and progressively build a portfolio of qualifications, practical skills and evidence of progression.

The environment supports the learner
A learner attending KCL's farm-based provision does not have to pursue a land-based career.
For example, a learner whose aspiration is to become an electrician may benefit from the farm as a calm, therapeutic learning environment while following an Electrical & Building Services progression pathway.
Similarly, another learner may discover that their interest in animals or outdoor learning can become the foundation for a future vocational destination. KCL uses the right environment, support and curriculum for the individual learner.

KCL bridges personalised SEND education and future opportunities. Success will look different for every learner. It may begin with re-engaging with education and achieving their first accredited unit, and progress towards a qualification, greater independence, college, vocational training, an industry card, an apprenticeship or employment.
