Sport & Active Learning

Denham Community Centre, Denham, Buckinghamshire

Denham is KCL's sport and active learning provision: football, physical activity and outdoor gym work, with English, maths and Digital Skills taught alongside. It suits learners who settle through movement, and who find a pitch easier to walk onto than a classroom.

What runs here

Movement first, then everything that follows it.

Physical activity is the way in, not the whole programme. Once a learner is attending and regulated, the academic and personal development work goes on around it.

01

Sport and movement

The core of the timetable at this site.

  • NCFE Level 1 Sport

An accredited route for learners whose interest in sport can carry a qualification, taught through sessions they are already taking part in.

  • Football

Small-sided games and skills sessions — the most reliable first reason many learners give for turning up.

  • Physical activity

Circuits, walking, warm-ups and cool-downs, scaled to what a learner can manage on the day.

  • Outdoor gym

Structured use of the outdoor equipment, with technique, counting and progress a learner can track themselves.

02

Learning alongside

Academic work, kept moving while engagement is rebuilt.

  • Functional Skills

English and maths from Entry Level upward, taught through scores, times, distances, fixtures and records.

  • Digital Skills

Recording sessions, tracking progress and presenting results — digital literacy with a reason behind it.

03

Working with other people

What sport teaches that a worksheet cannot.

  • Teamwork

Depending on other people and being depended on, in short bursts with an immediate result.

  • Health and wellbeing

Sleep, food, movement and regulation, discussed in the context of something a learner already cares about.

  • Personal development

Losing well, trying again, taking instruction, and setting a target that is your own rather than someone else's.

Full-size pitches and open ground — structured sessions in small numbers, outdoors.

How progression works

Interests first. Progression follows.

One model runs through every KCL pathway. It is deliberately sequential: skipping to the end is how provision breaks down for the learners we work with.

  1. 01

    Interests

We start with what a young person will willingly do. Animals, a ball, a kitchen, a camera — the door has to open before anything else can happen.

  2. 02

    Engagement

Attendance and participation are built slowly and then protected. A learner who is present and settled is a learner who can be taught.

  3. 03

    Skills

Practical, functional and academic skills are taught inside the activity, so they are learned in the place they will actually be used.

  4. 04

    Achievement

Progress is recorded, and accredited wherever accreditation helps — unit awards, Functional Skills, Arts Award, vocational routes.

  5. 05

    Progression

The programme points at a real next step: school, college, training, supported employment, or a more independent adult life.

What learners work toward

Sport as a route to accredited progress.

NCFE Level 1 Sport sits alongside Functional Skills English and maths, with AQA Unit Awards recording achievement in shorter steps where a full qualification is not yet the right target.

A note on places

Denham runs alongside the farm.

Denham remains an active KCL provision and continues to take learners for whom sport is the way in. Nathan's Farm is where places are currently focused, so most new referrals are discussed against the farm first, and Denham is offered where the fit is clearly better.
